Portraits captured for your self-celebration, wedding, family, and career are worthy investments. Lamentably, most of us only appreciate the need to hire a professional to shoot our weddings, engagement and family (if they are lucky). The rest of our memories can be journaled with a camera phone. Endless selfies are stored on our phone devices but do they go on your wall or printed for an album. Have you considered, what will happen to your images over time and if it will still be usable? A classic example is the data stored on videotape or even CDs. I have a couple of CDs that I cannot use on my MAC laptop… just imagine.

I always admired my Aunt Patsy’s wall of portraits, and recently I asked her why she possessed one. She shared that the Wall tells a story and that she can stay connected with her loved ones by reminiscing and appreciating them on a daily basis. She also has lots of photos in albums, but they weren’t in arm’s reach whereas the Wall was readily visible.

A photographer Jeanine Thurston shared a letter that she received from a client that powerfully illustrates the value of photography.
Here’s the letter she obtained:

Jeanine –

Today I am writing for a couple of reasons. I have some quiet time at the moment and need to get a couple of things off my mind. I will leave this for my husband to deliver to you when he is ready.

You photographed my wedding; you photographed my first pregnancy and my first baby. I contacted you awhile back to photograph my 2nd child and family. After getting prices and realizing I would want all of the pictures as we love your work – I decided against spending $500+ – which is what I normally spend for portraits and prints with you… Please know it is not because I don’t value your amazing eye, or how much we love the experience.

That week that I decided to NOT do a session with you, this is how I spent some money.

On Sunday I called and cancelled our session. Monday I went out and got my hair cut ($39+tip), and coloured ($65), Thursday I had my nails done ($24), my family went out to dinner at a somewhat expensive restaurant for no particular reason costing us $79 + tip. This was just 4 days since cancelling our session, already totalling over $200 for unnecessary things. My nails only lasted about 2 weeks, my hair is gone, and seven weeks passed when I got the phone call from our doctor. It was not something I expected and the cancer has spread very quickly. I will be leaving my husband, my 6-year-old girl and my now 2-year-old – not by choice. It is very hard for me to talk about it which is why I need to write you.

I watch your Facebook page and your posts about the value of a photo and if I could give back all of those things that I purchased these few weeks after I cancelled my session with you, knowing what I know now and have that session, well… I would do it in a heartbeat.

Now my time is done and there are no more chances for me. The next time someone cancels a session – my wish is that you forward this letter to them. Time is fragile, it is gone before you know you had it. If you charged $200 for one print it wouldn’t be enough for what it is actually worth. I cringe to think that my priorities were a manicure over a memory to pass onto my babies and husband.

My love and thanks for what you have given us from past photos. I am so sorry that I did not see it as more than paper until now.

Karen L.

Wow, that was moving for me. The life we are given is pretty short and when you have the opportunity, celebrate your milestones with a photographer and leave a legacy behind for generations to come.

How to refresh your makeup at an evening event http://milesofbeautytt.com/2018/01/18/how-to-refresh-your-makeup-at-an-evening-event/ http://milesofbeautytt.com/2018/01/18/how-to-refresh-your-makeup-at-an-evening-event/#respond Thu, 18 Jan 2018 08:00:19 +0000 http://milesofbeautytt.com/?p=1139 You have just completed your makeup look after looking at youtube tutorial or better yet hired a professional makeup artist to do your makeup. You look stunning and want to keep it that way even after you dance under the stars all night.

Here are few tips to freshen up your makeup for an all-nighter

1. Discreetly pull out a mirror to assess the situation. More than likely, there isn’t an area to privately touch up the makeup so have your compact mirror at hand.

2. Use blotting sheets or 1 ply tissue ( separate two-ply) to blot unwanted shine. Gently press the paper with a patting motion on the skin. Do not wipe because the makeup could move if not set correctly.

3. Walk with a translucent powder to touch up after blotting. Avoid powder application on wet skin to prevent the cakey look. Instead of retouching the entire face, lightly dust powder in TZone area.

4. Use long-wearing matte lipsticks if you love bright colours and have difficulty keeping lipstick on your lips. Other formulas will not last the night if you always lick your lips and if you are wearing bright coloured lipstick, it looks messy. Urgh!  The best bet would be wearing nude  lipstick and reapply during the night.

Most people could not be bothered to refreshen up during their evening out especially at a party. However, if you are a diva with the paparazzi following you all night or a selfie queen, then nothing is worse than seeing the grease not glow on your skin. Therefore take a moment and pack your bag with your touch up kit for an outstanding look all evening.

I have heard it repeatedly, and it doesn’t matter if you are male or female, most people hate how they look in photos. It’s the first thing someone would mention before a photo session and possibly why a person would avoid one in the first place. Hence the reason why selfies are so popular because you can take pics of yourself repeatedly until you get your best angle. Apparently, this angle or mirror image of yourself is pure foolery because according to a new study, conducted by Dr David White, has found that the pictures we choose to represent ourselves aren’t accurate depictions of what we look like in person. In fact, a total stranger is better at picking photos that “look like us” than we are (cited by https://www.scienceofpeople.com/2016/10/dont-like-pictures/) Isn’t that something!
I remember one of my aunts got so upset with me when I took a random shot of her for my memory keeping. She had this beautiful, amazing smile that I captured at the moment, but yet she saw flaws that I didn’t even observe on my end. Alas, I had to delete the photo. Hence the reason I don’t like to show clients or models images from my camera because I would see this beauty before me but they would see their deep smile lines, uneven eyes, sparse hairline or big arms. The self-criticism is endless.
So how to cure the disease of self-criticism. Let go or better yet ask for another perspective. Always remember that the one flaw you think you have, most times it’s barely noticeable by others. Instead of avoiding pictures, get someone to take lots of pictures of you. You will be amazed how great you can look.

Here are a few of my top faves that I use and also apply on my clients.

Estee Lauder Stay in Place Double Wear Eyeliner – Onyx

It’s the only eyeliner that personally uses because it goes on soft, smooth and dries without breaking up on the waterline. It just doesn’t budge and takes a few wipes of eye remover to clean it off. Just perfect for my brides and clients who require a waterproof formula. It’s a bit pricey but hey what do you expect for a top of the line product.
Bury me if they discontinue this eyeliner!

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum

A good serum is a girl’s friend, but a great one is her bestie. This serum works! Although I’m using another serum Artistry Youth Xtend, the Advanced Night Repair is still part of my nightly skin care regime. Your skin feels renewed after of a couple of uses and the healthy glow in a few weeks is simply amazing.

Estee Lauder Idealist Pore Minimizing Skin Refinisher

I love to use this serum under my moisturiser in the daytime. My skin looks so smooth and even toned. Makeup looks incredibly flawless after every application. People always compliment me when I use this product; it’s like the extra oomph you need. Also, I like to use this product on clients with visible open pores or a dull looking complexion.

Estee Lauder New Dimension Shape and Fill Expert Serum

At first, when I used this product, I found it was useless especially after the hype from the sales agent. Recently I have been struggling with hollows under my eyes, so I decided to apply it after a deep cleansing mask. Listen when I woke up I felt as if I had a Botox or dermal filler treatment. My skin looked firm, bright and super silky. It’s one to add to your skincare arsenal for days when you need a little firming and lifting.

There you have it – my favourite Estee Lauder products. I particularly recommend the Advanced Night Repair as a must try once in your lifetime product.

Three top reasons for adding toner to your skin regime http://milesofbeautytt.com/2017/03/04/three-crucial-reasons-for-adding-toner-to-your-skin-regime/ http://milesofbeautytt.com/2017/03/04/three-crucial-reasons-for-adding-toner-to-your-skin-regime/#respond Sat, 04 Mar 2017 23:58:35 +0000 http://milesofbeautytt.com/?p=1072 Youth Xtend toner (Centre)

Artistry Youth Xtend Skin System – Toner (Centre)

Skin toner must have middle child syndrome. It is neglected. and often left out of the skin care routine. Despite all we heard how important it is to cleanse, tone and moisturize our skin day –  how many of us tone.  I could tell you from my experience that I used to skip this step all the time because it was so time-consuming.  However, recently I discovered that lack of toner could be the reason for my open pores, and that it has  many benefits that my skin needed. Since I don’t play around with my skin care, I jumped on board immediately by adding toner to my cleansing routine.

Here are the top 3 reasons why you need skin toner in your life:

1. It shrinks open pores

Applying toner to a cotton ball not only removes excess oil from the skin but also reduces its pore size.

2. Lack of toner causes open pores.

A skincare Artistry agent explained that not including toner to your skin regime can cause open pores. Gasp!
After cleansing skin, your pores open up after the removal of dirt and grime from your face. Therefore, you need to close it with toner which acts as a protective layer thus reducing the penetration of impurities and environmental contaminants into the skin.

3. It moisturizes.

Some toners are humectants, which means that they help to bind moisture to the skin. I love to moisturize. Its the key to your skin suppleness and youthfulness. So yeah, if a toner can moisturize then I want it.

While makeup artists have the tools and techniques to prohibit shine, we can rarely do much about sweat because it is like rain – unless you have mystical powers that can control the elements.

Don’t lose hope; there are ways to keep your makeup intact even while you are feeling the heat. Here are a few quick tips

Prepare for it

_dsc0402-edit

  1. Use a primer under your foundation for hold and longevity. Primers also act as a barrier for anything that will come in or out.

2. Set your foundation and concealer with a translucent or setting powder to aid in the absorption of the creamy product. After applying powder, lightly spray all over the face with a misting product like MAC fix plus then reapply powder by dusting on the face to ensure hold.

_dsc0413

3. Keep your body hydrated by drinking lots of water to cool down your internal temperature. I’m pretty sure you heard this all your life but it no joke. Drink lots of water!

4. Finally, walk with blotting sheets, 2 ply tissue and a fan. Calm yourself with a fan, then blot after your skin is dry with a patting motion.

Embrace it

For some people, sweat is inevitable and uncontrollable and may be a deterrent for wearing makeup. However, if you follow these sweat-proof tips, you will feel more confident in your makeup and possibly even embrace it.

Even for professional makeup artists, we are constantly on the search for the Holy Grail foundation that will meet, if not all, most of our clients’ needs.

Now personally this year, I love these four foundations that are scattered on my bathroom counter. Most people who know me well, will realize I don’t leave my house without covering my skin with a base and its not because I have awful skin but instead I feel protected from the elements when I do.

So here are my top go tos:

For lighter days I use the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB 8 in 1 Beauty Balm Skin Perfector in Deep. It gives you a light, fresh, no makeup look when you don’t feel for anything heavy on the skin.

Oh my goodness, I love this formula… the Black Up CC cream is a dream for women of colour whom what a fresh radiant light coverage. My only con with this product is the amount; it should be in a drum.

The foundation I use when I want a demi matte finish is the Loreal Infallible Pro matte foundation. It give you a somewhat hydrated and matte finish at the same time and it lasts all day when paired with a good primer.

Finally, Black Up strikes again with their Mattifying foundation that I use to glam up or when I need a medium to full coverage with minimal shine. Black Up is a bit pricer than other formulas but for women of colour who don’t want a ashy nor cakey look with the full coverage and mattifying benefits then this is the product for you.

That’s it for now, if find another favourite go to foundation, I will share with you because the makeup struggle is so real.

Bridal Beauty Tip #1 http://milesofbeautytt.com/2016/02/24/bridal-beauty-tip-1/ http://milesofbeautytt.com/2016/02/24/bridal-beauty-tip-1/#respond Wed, 24 Feb 2016 15:23:10 +0000 http://milesofbeautytt.com/?p=992

_DSC2023-EditBefore you visit your makeup artist for a trial, always walk with pictures to show the makeup you like. Download images of the makeup you love and even of the ones you don’t love. This research is key to the success of your bridal trial as in most cases a makeup artist may not perceive what you had in mind or described, especially if you don’t normally wear makeup. Also, share your concerns with your artist. Do you perspire excessively? Do you have oily or dry skin? Do you think you will be teary eyed on your day? A professional makeup-artist should be able to guide you on the best makeup look and approach. Communication manages expectation.

What elements determine a strong professional headshot versus an amateur snapshot? Often overlooked but is so important is the use of a professional hair and make-up artist. This is true especially for women, of course, (but men can always benefit from a little shine removal and evening-out of the skin). Just because we do our own make-up every morning, even if we do a good job, doesn’t mean we know what looks best on camera. And while you are concentrating on posing, the last thing you should be doing is worrying about how your make-up is holding up, or if your hair is out of place. That is the make-up artist’s job.

Due to the growth of social media, our online appearance can be just as important, or even more important than our in-person image due to how many people view online profiles including decision makers. While a grainy profile picture might not look as bad to a potential employer as an image of you taking body shots off of a friend at an all-inclusive fete, your profile picture should reflect your attention to detail and professionalism. Whether a picture is worth 100 words, 1,000 words, or 10,000 words – you can’t overestimate the importance of an effective image.
